Boiler Repair: Get the Fault Explained Before Approving Work
No heat, a returning fault code, leaking water or unreliable hot water? Call 778-798-4343 with your boiler model and symptom. Efficient Heating Service investigates the appliance and connected heating system, explains the findings and proposed cost, and obtains approval before carrying out the recommended repair.
Which Symptom Best Matches Your Boiler Problem?
Describe what stopped working rather than guessing the failed part. Whether the boiler fires, which rooms heat and whether taps stay hot all help define the starting point. Use the guides below for pressure and circulation questions, then provide the model and recent history when booking.
- pressure, expansion tank and relief-valve guide
- cold-zone, pump and zone-valve guide
- Parts identification, compatibility and quote questions
For short cycling, record when starts and stops occur and which zones are active. Caleffi explains the relationship between output, demand and cycling in its thermal-storage guidance. A buffer tank or replacement boiler is not automatically the answer; the system needs assessment.
What Will the Diagnostic Visit Establish?
The visit should establish the failed function, the evidence supporting a repair and any uncertainty that remains. We consider the operating sequence and relevant connected components rather than treating a displayed code as a parts list. The proposed work and price are explained before approval.
- Identify the model, controller, affected demand and previous work.
- Check the relevant operating conditions and isolate the fault.
- Explain the finding, compatible repair, exclusions and parts timing.
- Test the repaired function and document any remaining concern.
Keep appliance covers closed. If you smell gas, leave the building and call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 or 911 from outside. For a CO alarm, leave and call 911. See FortisBC gas safety guidance.
How Much Will Repair Cost, and When Is Replacement Worth Comparing?
Repair cost depends on the confirmed fault, component compatibility, access and required labour. Ask for assessment charges, repair inclusions, taxes and warranty terms separately. For major work, compare the complete repair with replacement scope and the remaining equipment condition before deciding which proposal best addresses your needs.
An online part price does not include diagnosis, connection work or verification. Confirm availability before relying on a return-visit date. A manufacturer warranty may cover the component without covering every service cost.
Use boiler installation and replacement planning when repair viability is uncertain or a redesign is needed. For an operating system needing planned care, use routine boiler service.
Compare the repair quote line by line
| Item | What to confirm before approval |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit | Charge, included investigation and whether any credit toward an approved repair applies. |
| Parts and labour | The diagnosed fault, exact replacement component, labour, taxes and any excluded work. |
| Return visit | Parts availability, additional visit charges and the expected interruption to heating or hot water. |
| Warranty | Separate manufacturer part coverage from labour coverage; ask for the duration, exclusions and claim contact in writing. |
| Repair outcome | How the original symptom will be tested again and which unresolved system issues remain outside the quote. |
We do not publish a single repair price for every fault. Call 778-798-4343 with your model, symptom and city to confirm assessment arrangements; approve a repair only after the findings and scope are explained.
Find the Guidance for Your Boiler Brand
The full model and controller matter as much as the brand name. These guides explain equipment families, fault context and questions to prepare for diagnosis. Read the identification label when safely accessible, and avoid using instructions or part numbers from a different boiler generation.
Find Your Local Boiler Repair Page
Select your city for neighbourhood coverage, property considerations and local booking information. Describe the actual boiler and affected rooms when contacting us; location alone cannot identify the equipment or fault. For shared systems, confirm access arrangements and who can authorize the assessment and proposed repair.
Heating Works but the Taps Run Cold: What Should You Report?
Tell us whether the problem affects every hot-water outlet or only one, and whether it occurs at low flow or when several outlets run together. Those details help separate a fixture concern from a boiler-side problem. The full model establishes which hot-water components and controls are present.
A combi boiler and a heating-only boiler connected to an indirect tank need different diagnostic starting points. Read our Navien model guide or IBC equipment guide before describing the appliance as a tankless water heater.
In its combi-boiler FAQ, Navien explains that domestic hot-water demand temporarily takes priority over space heating. Heating should then return to its normal control sequence; failure to resume is different from the intended pause.
Keep a brief record: which taps are affected, whether the display recognizes a hot-water demand, any code and what happens when the tap closes. Do not open the appliance or alter service settings. A flow sensor, control or heat-transfer component should only be recommended after diagnosis. See our component replacement questions.
Why Does the Boiler Keep Starting and Stopping?
Frequent starts need context: which demand is active, how long the burner runs and whether a fault appears. A pump continuing to run is not the same as the burner firing. Record the pattern rather than changing installer settings, then arrange diagnosis if operation or comfort has changed.
IBC’s V10 controller manual describes a control differential used to avoid short cycling. Controls, minimum firing output and the active heating load must be considered together; there is no universal number of starts that identifies a defective board.
Mention whether cycling happens with one small zone, during mild weather, during hot-water use or after a recent repair. If rooms stay cold, the pump and zone-control guide explains the observations that help frame the assessment.
For a newly developed fault, use repair diagnosis. If the assessment instead identifies a system-design mismatch, compare the proposed control or piping changes with installation planning. Do not assume a bigger boiler will resolve cycling.
Questions Before Booking Boiler Repair
The most useful repair questions concern evidence, scope and the next decision. These answers explain what a code can tell you, how to prepare for a visit and when to compare replacement. If the symptom is active, mention it when booking so the assessment matches the problem.
Can a fault code tell me which part to buy?
A code identifies a reported condition or failed stage. It must be interpreted for the exact model and controller. Wiring, supply conditions or another component can affect that stage; the code alone is not a parts order.
Why does my boiler start and stop repeatedly?
Short cycling can involve the relationship between heat output and demand, control settings or water-side conditions. Note whether it happens with one small zone or the whole home. Diagnosis should establish the cause before a component is replaced.
Why is there hot water but no room heating?
The boiler may be responding to one demand while another fails. The technician needs to identify whether the system is combi or uses an indirect tank, then investigate the heating call, controls and distribution path.
Can you give a repair price over the phone?
We can discuss the symptom and assessment arrangements. A repair scope needs the diagnosed fault, compatible component and access requirements. Ask what the diagnostic visit costs and what requires separate approval before booking.
Should I reset a boiler that keeps locking out?
Follow the user instructions for your exact model. Do not keep resetting a recurring fault. Record the code and circumstances, and arrange diagnosis; stop troubleshooting immediately if there is a gas smell, CO alarm or other immediate danger.
Is a boiler replacement always better after a costly part fails?
No. Compare the complete repair proposal with the complete replacement scope, including warranty terms, equipment condition, parts support and unresolved system issues. Age or a component price alone does not establish the better option.
Why does hot water take time to reach a distant tap?
The wait at a tap can include the water already in the distribution piping; hot-water production at the appliance and arrival at the fixture are different. Tell us whether the delay is longstanding or new, and whether every outlet behaves the same way.
Does a combi boiler mix radiator water with tap water?
No. In the normal design, heat transfers between separate heating and domestic-water circuits through a heat exchanger. Identify the exact appliance before discussing a hot-water or pressure concern; the circuits have different roles and require the appropriate assessment.
