Heat Pump Installation in Vancouver

Vancouver has some of the oldest and most varied housing in the region: character homes with hot-water radiators, 1950s bungalows with gas furnaces, laneway homes, and condo towers. A heat pump plan for one of these doesn’t fit the others. We design and install ducted, ductless and dual fuel heat pumps across the city, sized for your house and not for an average one.

Vancouver homes and what they need

Home type Usual heat pump approach
Character homes with a hot-water boiler and radiators Ductless heads for cooling and shoulder-season heat, with the boiler kept for the coldest days, or a planned full switch
Bungalows and Vancouver Specials with a gas furnace Ducted heat pump on the existing ducts, or dual fuel with a new high-efficiency furnace
Homes with electric baseboards (often basements and suites) Ductless mini-splits per zone. Often eligible for rebates
Laneway homes and new builds Compact ducted or ductless systems designed with the building envelope
Condos and townhouses Ductless or slim-duct units, subject to strata approval

Things we plan for in Vancouver

  • Tight side yards. Many lots have narrow side setbacks with the neighbour’s bedroom windows close by. We choose quiet models, use wall brackets where they help, and place units to keep sound away from living spaces.
  • Older electrical panels. Many older homes still run on 60–100 amp service. We check panel capacity before quoting so a panel upgrade doesn’t surprise you later.
  • Old ductwork. Ducts sized decades ago for a hot-air furnace can be too small for a heat pump’s airflow. We measure static pressure and fix the problem areas.
  • Permits. The City of Vancouver issues its own electrical and gas permits, which is different from most other Lower Mainland municipalities. We handle the permits required for your installation.
  • Strata approvals. For condos and townhouses we provide spec sheets, sound ratings and an installation plan for your strata council.

Rebates for Vancouver homeowners

If your home is heated by electric baseboards or an electric furnace, you may qualify for provincial heat pump rebates. Gas-heated homes may qualify for dual fuel offers. Income-qualified households can get higher amounts. Read the BC heat pump rebate guide before signing a quote, and see the cost guide for typical prices.

Our installation process

  1. Site visit: heat-load calculation, panel and duct check, outdoor unit placement
  2. Written quote: exact model numbers, electrical scope, permits and warranty listed
  3. Installation: usually one day for single-zone, one to three days for ducted or multi-zone
  4. Commissioning: testing in heating, cooling and defrost, thermostat setup, a walkthrough with you
  5. Paperwork: warranty registration and help with rebate documents
