How Our Gas Fireplace Services Keep Your System Working

Your gas fireplace is designed to safely burn natural gas or propane and release heat through a burner that is ignited by a pilot flame or spark ignition system. Air from outside feeds combustion, while exhaust gases exit through the vent, keeping your indoor air safe.

When everything is working correctly, the pilot or ignition system lights the main burner, the flame burns cleanly, and the glass stays relatively clear. If the flame is unstable, the glass keeps turning black, or the fireplace shuts itself off, those are all signs that professional gas fireplace services—inspection, cleaning or repair—are needed.

During a service visit, our certified gas technicians will explain what each component does—pilot, burner, thermocouple, thermopile, gas valve, switches and safeties—and which behaviours are normal or concerning. Our goal is for you to understand how your fireplace works and to know exactly when to call for gas fireplace services.

Gas Fireplace Services – Common Internal Problems

Thermocouple

The thermocouple is a small but essential safety component that sends a signal to the gas control valve. When the pilot flame heats the upper section of the thermocouple, it generates a small voltage that tells the valve a flame is present. This allows gas to continue flowing and keeps the pilot light on.

Over time, the tip of the thermocouple becomes worn or burnt and stops sending enough voltage. When that happens, it must be replaced. Because it is so exposed, the thermocouple is often the part that needs replacement most frequently as part of our gas fireplace services.

Gas Control Valve

In some cases, the problem is not the thermocouple but the gas control valve itself. The valve may receive the signal from the thermocouple, but due to an internal fault or mechanical wear, it fails to recognize the voltage properly, causing the pilot light to go out.

If your pilot doesn’t stay lit, you are usually facing one of two issues: a faulty thermocouple or a malfunctioning gas control valve. Our technicians test both parts and carry many common valve types for fast, professional gas fireplace services across the Lower Mainland.

Thermopile (Power Generator)

Some fireplaces also use a thermopile, sometimes called a power generator. In many designs, the thermocouple keeps the pilot flame burning while the thermopile provides power to the main burner circuit through the gas valve. If the thermopile voltage drops below an acceptable level, it must be replaced.

Spark Ignitor & Wall Switch

Another frequent issue is a faulty spark ignitor—especially when you try to relight the fireplace after summer. Dirt, debris or corrosion around the pilot area can prevent a good spark. In other cases, the problem is the wall switch: many builders install standard 120-volt switches instead of millivolt-rated ones, which eventually fail and stop sending enough voltage to the gas valve.

Our certified technicians are highly experienced in diagnosing these internal components and installing proper replacement parts so your fireplace runs safely and reliably as part of our ongoing gas fireplace services.

Gas Fireplace Services – Common Service Problems

“The pilot light doesn’t stay on!”

On gas fireplace service calls, this is one of the most common complaints. It is usually caused by one of the following:

  • Not knowing the correct procedure to relight your gas fireplace
  • A defective thermocouple
  • A defective thermopile / power generator
  • A defective gas control valve
  • A defective safety switch or limit control

Gas Fireplace Maintenance and Basic Troubleshooting

If your gas fireplace has been turned off for a long time, it’s normal to need a quick refresher on how it works.

If your ignition system doesn’t light at all, you can check a few basic items before calling for professional gas fireplace services, as long as you feel completely safe doing so.

In general, maintenance should be performed annually to ensure your fireplace is functioning properly and safely during the heating season.

When you first turn on your fireplace (using a wall switch or remote) and you don’t see a spark at the pilot hood, check whether there is electricity to the fireplace plug and whether the pilot light is lit.

Try the switch or remote again. If the electrode is sparking to the pilot hood or you hear clicking from the gas valve but there is no flame, check that the manual gas shutoff valve is open.

When to Call a Certified Gas Contractor

The manual gas shutoff valve is closed when the handle is perpendicular to the gas line and open when the handle is in line with the piping.

If you have verified that electricity is present, the manual shutoff valves are open, gas is turned on, and the electrode is sparking to the hood but the pilot flame will not remain on, professional gas fireplace services are required.

At that point, turn off the electricity and gas supply to the fireplace and contact a certified gas contractor. Our 24/7 phone line makes it easy to book a qualified gas fireplace technician to inspect, clean and repair your unit.
