Gas Line Installation for BBQs, Ranges, Dryers and More
Switching to a gas range, adding a natural gas BBQ on the patio, or hooking up a gas dryer all start with the same thing: a properly sized, permitted gas line. Efficient Heating Service is a licensed Class B gas fitter. We plan, install and pressure-test gas piping for homes across Burnaby, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, and we handle the permit.
What we connect
| Appliance | Typical job |
|---|---|
| Natural gas BBQ | Line run to the patio or deck with an exterior quick-connect outlet and shut-off valve |
| Gas range or cooktop | New line to the kitchen, appliance valve and flexible connector; conversion from electric |
| Gas dryer | Line to the laundry area with shut-off valve; venting checked |
| Patio heater or fire table | Exterior line with quick-connect or hard connection |
| Garage or shop heater | Line, valve and venting for a unit heater |
| Furnace or boiler | New or rerouted supply line during a heating installation. See furnace installation and boiler installation |

How a gas line installation works
- Site visit and load check. We add up the gas demand (BTU/h) of every appliance on your system and check the meter and the existing pipe sizes. Adding a big BBQ or range to an undersized line can starve your furnace or water heater.
- Route planning. We choose the shortest safe route through the basement, crawl space, garage or exterior wall, with as little drywall work as possible.
- Permit. Gas work in BC needs a permit, issued by Technical Safety BC in most municipalities and by the City of Vancouver for Vancouver addresses. We take care of it.
- Installation. We install code-compliant piping, with a shut-off valve at each appliance and proper supports and protection where the line runs outdoors.
- Pressure test and start-up. We test the new piping for leaks, connect and light the appliance, and check the flame and operation.
- Inspection. Where an inspection is required, the work is inspected under the permit.
What affects the price
- Length and route of the line, including how many floors, walls and finished ceilings it passes through
- Whether the existing main line and meter can handle the added load
- Indoor or outdoor run, and exterior finishing
- Number of appliances connected in the same visit. Adding two at once costs less than two separate jobs.
- Permit fees
We give a written quote after seeing the route.
Gas line questions
Can I install a gas line myself?
No. In BC, gas piping and appliance connections must be installed by a licensed gas fitter under a permit. Unpermitted gas work is a safety risk and can cause problems with insurance and when you sell your home.
Can my propane BBQ be converted to natural gas?
Only if the manufacturer offers an approved conversion kit for that model. Many BBQs can’t be converted. In that case a natural-gas model is needed.
How long does it take?
Most single-appliance lines are done in a day. The permit and any inspection add some time before and after.
Do you also repair gas lines?
Yes. We find and repair leaks, replace old valves and connectors, and restore service after FortisBC has made a leak safe. If you smell gas right now, read what to do if you smell gas first.
